Blank Space Stories
STEP 1: Write a short story
Your story can be about anything from a trip, to a party, to a daily routine. Write a few sentences to tell the story. Don’t worry about making it funny yet!

Example:
I make my family dinner every Tuesday night. First, I mix the eggs and milk in a large bowl. Then, I bake it in the oven for 30 minutes. Voila! A delicious meal for the family.
STEP 2: Choose words to remove
Choose 3-5 words to remove. These words will be replaced with other silly words when you share your story with others.
STEP 3: Label your blank spaces.
Each blank needs to have a different label so the user knows what kind of word is needed. You can use labels like “noun” and “adjective” or even more descriptive labels like “animal” and “color”.

When you are ready to share your story with others, first ask them for words to go with each labelled blank space. Then, read the new version of the story out loud.
The blank spaces in these stories work like containers for information. Each container also has a label.
In computer science, we call this a variable.
